How to Add Cardio Without Losing Your Squat

How to Add Cardio Without Losing Your Squat

The fear is reasonable: add running or cycling volume and your squat numbers start sliding. This usually isn't cardio's fault — it's a scheduling problem. Hard conditioning work too close to a heavy lower-body session eats into the recovery that session needed.

The split I default to: keep conditioning to two sessions a week, place them the day after a lift rather than the day before, and keep intensity zone-based rather than all-out every time. One interval session and one steady-state session covers most goals.

Total weekly volume matters more than any single session. If conditioning volume climbs, something else — usually accessory lifting — needs to come down to keep the whole week recoverable.

Track your main lift's bar speed as your canary. If it's dropping on the same weights for two weeks running, that's your prompt to pull back on conditioning before it shows up as a missed lift.
